Eric Symons

The tradition of the Spanish guitar predates the guitar itself. The moors brought the Oud to the West, and with it came a rich heritage that spans centuries. The Oud became the Lute, and the Vihuela del Mano, the grand parents of the guitar. Eric Symons is a guitarist composer who lives for the roots of the instrument by embracing the Spanish tradition, with a love that is inspired by his own maternal Spanish heritage.

His compositions for the guitar span many styles, as do his compositions for film and video. These are always the highlights of his performances. His recent fifth album, “Recital: 2003” has already sold several thousand copies. Eric’s ensemble for cross-over Latin and Flamenco music, Allegro Picante, with Dave Blakey on guitar and Moses Sedler on cello with percussionist R.J. Franco has won accolades for its innovation in concert at major events throughout the Bay Area.

The repertoire played in Eric’s concerts is a break from the traditional guitar society program, embracing many styles and reaching a diverse audience, with warmly received commentaries that entice an audience to further understand the wonderfully rich history of the Spanish Guitar.
